Having a coffee at GiGi’s restaurant one morning and couldn’t resist this image of a food cart on a sunny day with a myriad of interesting shapes and colours.
The Boathouse Restaurant NY
Oil on canvas 24x12 PRIVATE COLLECTION
We were in New York during a hot summer. We were walking through Central Park when I started to thirst for a cold beer and we found 'The Boathouse' which is a restaurant that opens up to a lake where people were rowing around in cute little boats. Walking in I was instantly captivated by the atmosphere as people sat in leather chairs drinking beer and eating food with Jazz piano in the background, as they looked out to the striking sunlit lake. The contrast of the dark interior and the super bright summer day outside is what inspired the painting. That's why the people are painted in an almost black silhouette, because that's how they looked in the contrast to the light. It was a magnificent ambient moment to capture.
Dzershinsk
Oil on canvas 24x18 PRIVATE COLLECTION
Dzershinsk is a Russian city that rates in the top ten most toxic cities in the world. Whilst not exactly on your bucket-list to visit, I was captivated by the cold, grungy industrial feel. The heavy plumes of smoke, the snow bound cars and railway tracks all add to the atmosphere of cold and grey. That's what I strove to capture in this painting. Having said all that, one must never forget that the human souls that live there are valuable and normal people just like where you and I live.

Breakfast Creek
Acrylic on canvas 20x16 PRIVATE COLLECTION
The Brisbane River runs through the center of Brisbane and creates a variety of fantastic visuals. Breakfast creek is a tributary of this river and flows out to suburban areas. This is a great view with some industrial areas surrounding but always places to moor the boats. I wanted to capture the intense light bouncing off the river.

Red in Charleston
Acrylic on canvas 72x48 PRIVATE COLLECTION
Charleston South Carolina is one of my favorite cities in the US. The history of the slave trade and the Civil War abound here. But what also abounds is amazing and eclectic architecture and the colors are crazy good. Many houses are painted in pastel colors as you see in this painting but often accented with strong reds or blues. In this case it was the red VW against the pale yellow house with black shutters that i couldn't resist. And then of course that incredible pink Crepe Mertyle.

Hollywood Bowl
20x16 Oil on canvas board PRIVATE COLLECTION
I've been to many concerts at the Bowl and it's always an amazing experience. To describe it - it's like an amphitheater outdoor venue with about 10,000 capacity with the Hollywood Hills as it's backdrop. In the summer there are world class acts a few times a week. To be there as the sun is setting behind the bowl in the desert dry climate is so magical as you eat and drink wine. So good!
